Check out 14 Supermicro systems, all powered by AMD processors, certified for VMware vSAN 9.1

Big news for VMware users: Fourteen Supermicro systems, all powered by AMD EPYC processors, have been certified for vSAN ReadyNodes 9.1.

For those unfamiliar with vSAN, it’s a hyperconverged storage component of VMware Cloud Foundation, a private-cloud platform; and VMware vSphere Foundation, an enterprise workload platform. Essentially, vSAN offers integrated storage for private clouds.

The benefits of using vSAN include 30% or more reductions in storage costs, according to VMware. Other benefits include accelerated operation, making storage infrastructure teams over 40% more efficient.

There’s more, too: vSan also provides a consistent infrastructure and ops across environments, with the unified management tools users already have. It also offers flexibility by letting users grow storage independently of other server resources.

New Features

The latest version of vSAN adds several new features. These include global deduplication, vSAN-to-vSAN replication, enhanced data-path performance, support for AI and other memory-intensive workloads, and improved storage cluster networking.

Another cool feature of vSAN is ESA, short for Express Storage Architecture. Introduced with vSAN 8, it unlocks the capabilities of modern hardware for greater workload performance.

ESA lets users claim storage devices in what’s known as a storage pool. There, all devices contribute to the capacity of the vSAN. This drives down costs. It also simplifies administration by improving how a device contributes as a storage resource to the cluster.

As certified by Broadcom, which acquired VMware in 2023, these 14 Supermicro systems powered by AMD EPYC processors are now compatible with vSAN 9.1:
